Dryer Fire Safety Tips

Did you know clothes dryers are a common source of house fires?  There are thousands of house fires caused by dryer exhaust ducts every year. When the exhaust duct flow gets blocked from  lint build up it can cause the dryer to overheat and start a fire. Here’s a few tips to prevent a dryer fire.

  • Keep the lint screen clean – Every time you do a load of clothes clean the lint screen. This will also help dry your clothes faster.
  • Make sure the outside vent is attached and in good condition to insure no critters can build a nest and block the exhaust.
  • Keep the dryer vent and exhaust duct clean – Do a check on the outside vent to make sure the exhaust from the dryer is making it’s way outside. Do a regular cleaning of the vent. You can have it done by a professional or do it your self. Be sure to reconnect the duct hose back to the dryer before using the dryer again.
  • Be careful when drying clothing that have volatile chemicals on them. If  clothes have oils, stains, gas or other volatile material consider drying them outside.
  • Clean under, behind and around your washer and dryer so they are lint free.
