Del City, Oklahoma – Winter Driving Safety Tips

Driving in winter on snowy, icy roads through Oklahoma can be a challenge. Here’s a few safety tips to help you through the winter months ahead.

  1. Buckle up that seat belt!
  2. Have an ice scrapper, battery jumper cables, sand or cat liter and a small shovel.
  3. Be sure to keep your windshield washer fluid tank full.
  4. Make sure you have plenty of gas, you don’t want to run out of gas in a storm.
  5. Drive at a safe distance from other vehicles, at least three times the normal distance from the car in front of you.
  6. Reduce your speed and drive slowly to give yourself plenty of time to maneuver.
  7. Don’t use the cruise control or over drive while driving in a storm.
  8. Use the low gears to for better traction if needed.
  9. When climbing snow packed or icy hills, try to get some inertia to get up the hill and try not to stop while climbing the hill.
  10. Keep in mind that overpasses and bridges will freeze first.
  11. If you get stuck, don’t spin the wheels. Turn the wheels side to side to move the snow around to gain some traction. If that doesn’t work try shifting to reverse and forward again.
  12. Keep an emergency kit, blanket and snacks in your car just in case.
