Tree Safety Tips for Moore, OK

Christmas time is such a wonderful time of year. It’s full of family, friends, food and gathering around the Christmas tree. Here’s a few tips to keep things safe and happy during this celebration time.

  • Choosing a Christmas tree – Of course artificial trees are much safer but some prefer a live tree. Cutting your own tree is the best insurance for getting a fresh one that will last longer. When choosing a tree keep in mind the height and the shape for the space it will occupy. When choosing the location avoid direct sun exposure, open flames and heater vents.
  • Shopping – When shopping at a tree lot ask for assistance from the attendant,  find out which trees are the freshest.  For Frasier or Douglas firs you can bend a needle in half that is firmly attached to the tree, if it snaps it’s a good indication it’s fresh.
  • Preparing your tree – Once you pick the perfect tree you will need to cut off about an inch off the trunk before you mount it. This will allow your tree to absorb the water. Be sure to get your tree in water soon so the trunk doesn’t scab over. If you can’t mount your tree right away put it in a bucket of water.
  • Maintain your tree – Check the water level and make sure you keep it full. The first day you mount your tree it will be very thirsty and can absorb a gallon of water or more.
  • Decorating – When using lights check the strings before you put them on the tree. Make sure the cords are safe not frayed. Don’t over load the electrical circuits. If you have children or pets consider their safety, what kind of decorations are accessible to them.
  • Be safe and remove your tree from the house when the holidays are over. Having a dry tree in the house is a potential fire hazard.

We wish you a very safe and Happy Christmas!
