Being prepared for tornado season in Oklahoma is a must! Tornadoes can occur in Oklahoma any time of the year but prime conditions start from March through August. Most tornadoes occur between noon and midnight.
Here are a few tips to help prepare for a tornado:
- Documentation – BEFORE a disaster take pictures or video of your home, furnishings, and valuables and keep them in a safe place.
- Doors – Check your exterior doors, make sure they are secured to the wall framing with 3 or more hinges and a one inch long deadbolt.
- Windows – Installing impact-resistant windows may help reduce damage.
- Outside – When you think a storm is coming put outside items inside your garage or secure them so they don’t become flying debris.
- Have an emergency kit prepared within easy quick access. Think about the items you would want just in case, for example:
Flashlights (check the batteries)
Battery operated radio
First aid kit
Bottled water and gravity fed water filter
Medications
Generator with the manual and supplies
Emergency food
Manuel can opener
6. If you suspect an oncoming tornado go to an interior room, stay away from the corners of your house.
7. Go to the lowest floor if you have a basement.
8. Stay away from windows.
