Winter Safety Tip – Keep furnace vents clear!
This winter has been brutally cold lately. We all want to stay warm and safe. Here’s a safety tip – Avoid carbon monoxide poisoning from your furnace. During a storm when there is a large amount of snow falling furnace vents, fresh air intake pipes, and chimneys can become blocked with ice and snow.
Carbon monoxide poisoning can invade your home if they become blocked. If you live in a house or a mobile home with a flat roof be aware that snow could pile up and block the chimney causing the pilot light to go out. Carbon monoxide is a deadly gas that is colorless, odorless and tasteless. Symptons of carbon monoxide poisoning are headaches, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, mental confusion, fainting, fatigue, and burning eyes. If you think you are experiencing carbon monoxide poisoning open your doors and windows and leave your home and call 911. Be sure to maintain your carbon monoxide detector to make sure it is functioning properly. If you don’t have one you can easily purchase one at a building supply store or hardware store.
